Cock Fighting, Street Meat, Vinyl and a New Camera

Well, I’ve taken a step back into the world of digital photography.

And I quite like it…

A few months ago I organised a meet up for those here in Saigon who are also interested in photography. (You can read about that meet up HERE)

The turn out was good, I met some very nice people and very luckily had the chance to get my hands on a Ricoh GRII.

At the time I said, after trying it out for all of five minutes, that if there was any camera out there that could convince me to move back into the world of digital shooting, the Ricoh was it.

Fast forward a few months.

Almost eight months since I made the move back to film completely I began to get the digital/G.A.S itch. I knew it was no use fighting it, so after a day or two of researching the Ricoh online and watchign every review and video about it on Youtube, I ocntacted my friend Huy (whose Ricoh I played with at that meet up) to ask him where he had gotten his.

Huy told me that he actually sells Ricoh products but didn’t have the GR in stock (I don’t need the GRII jsut for the wi-fi.)

However, within about twenty minutes Huy had gotten me in contact with a friend of his, Thai, who was selling his old GR.

I bought it the next morning.

My new Ricoh GR. I shall name him, Rico.

Wow, what a camera. Small, light, super easy to use but with so much customization available it would make your head swim, I am so, so happy I picked this up.

After a day or two playing around with it, I met up with Thai on Thursday morning and we went exploring the ‘hems,’ or alleys around District 4 here in Saigon.

The files that are coming out of this camera are wonderful and I must say, I have never in my life seen digital noise like this.

It really does look about as close to film as I think you can get, right out of the camera.

I won’t bother typing up a huge full review since this model has been available for years and the internet is full of them already. What I will say is that being able to run out the door, Ricoh in my pocket, and come home with images like these is just a lot of fun.

Life in the alleys is certainly interesting, and while, as an avid animal lover, the cock fighting made for an uncomfortable viewing experience (more so after as I looked back on it. While I was shooting it I strangely felt almost nothing. Only later did I start to wonder and question why that was) I do belive that District 4 and the labyrinth within it is my favorite place to wander and shoot here in the city

The small size makes the Ricoh wonderful for up close portraits, most I assuming I was just a tourist, getting some holiday snaps.

Yes, I think I will be shooting a lot with the Ricoh over the coming months and saving my film for some bigger projects.
